Blinds

Choosing blinds

Which product suits which room, and what the fabric names actually mean.

What is the difference between blockout, light-filtering and sunscreen fabrics?

Blockout fabrics give the strongest room darkening and privacy. Light-filtering fabrics soften daylight for a diffused glow. Sunscreen fabrics cut glare while preserving an outward view during the day. Night-time privacy varies with all three, so the right choice depends on how the room is used.

Which blind is best for a bedroom?

Blockout roller blinds, blockout-lined romans and blockout honeycomb blinds are the usual choices. Small light gaps remain around the edges of any blind, so if complete darkness matters we can discuss pelmets, side channels or a layered curtain.

Which blinds suit kitchens, bathrooms and laundries?

Aluminium or PVC venetians and moisture-conscious roller fabrics handle humidity and cleaning best. Fabric-heavy options such as romans are less suited to areas with steam and cooking residue.

What is a double roller blind?

A double roller blind carries two fabrics on one window, commonly a sunscreen blind for daytime glare control and a blockout blind for evening privacy and darkness, each operating independently.

What are zebra blinds?

Zebra blinds use alternating sheer and solid horizontal bands. Aligning the bands lets light through, offsetting them blocks it, so you can adjust light without fully raising or lowering the blind.

Do honeycomb blinds really help with insulation?

The cellular structure traps a layer of air at the glass, which can reduce heat transfer. Real-world performance depends on the fit, the glazing and the whole window, so treat it as one contributor rather than a fix on its own.

What is top-down bottom-up operation?

It allows a blind to lower from the top and rise from the bottom, so you can bring in daylight at the top of the window while keeping the lower half private. It is commonly available on honeycomb blinds.

Which blinds suit very wide windows or sliding doors?

Panel glide blinds, vertical blinds and Veri Shades are designed for wide spans, with Veri Shades allowing walk-through access at doors you use regularly.

Can blinds be fitted inside the window recess?

Usually, provided the recess is deep enough for the roll, stack or headrail. We check recess depth, wall alignment and hardware clearances during the measure, because these decide light gaps and how the blind operates.

Will fabrics fade over time?

All fabrics change with prolonged sun exposure. West-facing and unshaded windows see it fastest. A more durable fabric, or an external layer such as an awning or outdoor blind, slows the process.

Curtains and shutters

Curtains, sheers and shutters

Should I choose curtains or blinds?

Blinds give clean lines and suit tight recesses. Curtains add softness, insulation and a more furnished look, and can make a window feel taller and wider. Many homes use both, with blinds in wet and working areas and curtains in living rooms and bedrooms.

Do sheer curtains give privacy at night?

Not on their own. Sheers provide daytime privacy while light is brighter outside than in, but once interior lights are on they are see-through. Pairing them with a blockout layer on a double track solves it.

What is an s-fold curtain?

An s-fold, or wave, heading holds the fabric in a continuous even wave from track to floor. It suits contemporary interiors and wide openings, and needs a specific track and calculated fullness to hold its shape.

How much stack space do curtains need?

Stack is the bunched fabric when the curtain is open. It depends on width, fabric weight and fullness, and doubles when two layers share a track. We calculate it before manufacture so doors and windows stay clear.

Do plantation shutters block all light?

They reduce light significantly, but small gaps remain around louvres, panels and frames. For full darkening, a blockout blind or curtain is the better choice.

Can shutters be fitted to bay or shaped windows?

Yes. Custom frames and hinged panel layouts can be designed for many bay, angled and shaped configurations. These are measured particularly carefully because the panels have to sit square.

Our service

Measuring, quoting and installation

How the process runs from first call to finished installation.

Is the measure and quote really free?

Yes. We visit your home, measure your windows and provide a written quote at no cost and with no obligation.

Do you service my suburb?

We service Sydney and surrounding areas from Castle Hill. See our Service Areas page or contact us to confirm. Coverage depends on travel and scheduling rather than a fixed boundary, so it is always worth asking.

What happens during the in-home consultation?

Our consultant brings product and fabric samples, discusses how each room is used, checks window orientation, privacy, glare, frame depth, handles, furniture and access, measures each opening and then prepares a written quote.

How long does the consultation take?

It depends on the number of windows and how many options you want to compare. A single room is usually quick, while a whole home takes longer because each opening is measured individually.

Why can you not quote over the phone?

Pricing depends on exact dimensions, fabric, hardware, control type and mounting conditions. Without measuring we would be guessing, and an inaccurate quote helps nobody.

How long does manufacturing take?

Lead times vary by product and are confirmed when you place your order, as items are custom-made to your measurements.

Can I supply my own measurements?

We measure ourselves for anything we install, because the measurement is what the product is manufactured to and responsibility for fit sits with us. You are welcome to send a floorplan beforehand so we can prepare.

Do you install what you supply?

Yes. Products are fitted, checked and demonstrated so you know how to operate and care for them, with aftercare available if needed.

Can products be motorised?

Many blinds, shutters and curtains can be motorised. See our Automation page for details. Power access and control preferences are planned before installation.

Can you work with my builder or designer?

Yes. For new builds and renovations we work to the program, confirming recesses, pelmet allowances, track fixings and power for motors while those details can still be changed easily.

Do you charge for samples?

No. Samples are brought to your consultation so you can compare colour, texture and opacity against your own flooring, paint and light.

What payment terms apply?

Terms are set out in your written quote before you commit. Because everything is custom-made to your measurements, orders are confirmed before manufacture begins.

Child safety

Child safety at the window

Corded window coverings are a known strangulation hazard for young children. See our Child Safety page for the full detail.

Are your products child-safe?

We offer child-safe options across our range, including cordless, motorised and wand-operated systems, and we install corded products to the Australian mandatory standard. See our Child Safety page for the detail.

What is the law on blind cords in Australia?

Corded internal window coverings are covered by the Competition and Consumer (Corded Internal Window Coverings) Safety Standard 2014. A corded covering must be installed so a loose cord cannot form a loop 220 mm or longer at less than 1600 mm above floor level, and warning labels supplied with the product must not be removed.

What is the safest option for a child's bedroom?

A cordless or motorised blind, because it removes the loose cord entirely rather than managing it. Where a cord or chain is unavoidable, it must be secured to the wall with a cleat or tensioner.

We already have corded blinds. What should we do?

Check that every cord and chain is secured to the wall and out of reach, and move cots, beds and climbable furniture away from windows. If anything is loose or the tensioner is missing, contact us or a qualified installer.

Can existing blinds be made safer without replacing them?

Often yes. Fitting a cleat or tensioner and securing loose cords addresses the immediate hazard. Where the product itself is the problem, a cordless or motorised replacement is the more reliable fix.

After installation

Care and warranty

How should I clean my blinds?

Most need regular light dusting rather than heavy cleaning. Venetian slats are dusted with the slats closed in each direction. Fabric blinds and curtains follow the care guidance for that specific fabric, which we provide on installation.

Can curtains be washed?

It depends entirely on the fabric. Some are washable, many are dry-clean only, and some should not be cleaned at home at all. Always check the care guidance for your fabric before attempting anything.

What does the warranty cover?

Warranty support is available across our product range. Product origin and warranty terms vary by the range selected, and the applicable details are confirmed in your written quote.

What if something stops working after installation?

Contact us. Aftercare is available, and we would rather look at a problem early than have you live with a blind that does not operate properly.

How long should custom window furnishings last?

With normal use and basic care, many years. Lifespan depends on the product, the fabric, sun exposure and how heavily the window is used.
